Recognizing Achievement

Awards

ISBM provides awards recognizing outstanding achievements and contributions to the field of behavioral medicine. Award recipients are recognized at the biannual International Congress of Behavioral Medicine (ICBM). 

For full details on the awards and eligibility criteria, please see the Call for Awards and Fellows. 

All awardees are selected from nominations submitted by member societies, except for the Early Career Awards, which are selected from eligible abstract presenters.

Scientific Awards

Scientific awards recognize scientific merits and academic accomplishment relative at three different scientific career stages. Within each stage individuals are recognized for their scientific merits.

This award recognizes an important contribution to the science of behavioral medicine at an early career stage. Applicants Should be no more than seven (7) years out from their highest degree, and/or have held a faculty or professional position for no more than seven (7) years.

This award recognizes substantial contributions to behavioral medicine over the whole of a career. Recipients are recognized for distinguished scholarly contributions to the science of behavioral medicine across a productive career.

This award recognizes distinguished theoretical or empirical contributions to behavioral medicine. Recipients have made several outstanding contributions to the science of behavioral medicine.

This award recognizes an outstanding contribution by a new investigator to the science of behavioral medicine. Recipients have made a specific, outstanding contribution to the science of behavioral medicine, and are more experienced than those who apply for the Early Career Award.

Service Awards

Service awards recognize excellence in achievements and contributions to the development of the field of behavioral medicine. There are separate awards for contributions at national or regional level, and contributions with regard to international collaboration. 

This award recognizes a distinguished career as a leader in the field of behavioral medicine. Recipients have made distinguished contributions at national or regional level to the development of behavioral medicine – whether as a clinical field, in public health and health promotion, in teaching, or in mentoring.

This award recognizes important contributions to facilitating international collaboration in the field of behavioral medicine. Recipients have made distinguished contributions to facilitate collaboration between ISBM member societies, or between ISBM and organizations outside ISBM.

ISBM Fellows

ISBM Fellows are individuals who demonstrate outstanding contribution to ISBM and to the field of behavioral medicine. Named Fellows serve as role models to our members and member societies and form an enduring cohort of acknowledged leaders dedicated to advancing the field.

Fellows are selected on their embodiment of ISBM values and priorities, with a focus on contributions in the areas below, including specific contribution to ISBM. Nominees will demonstrate substantial positive influence on the field of behavioral medicine through some combination of the following: 

Research contributions should represent a transdisciplinary approach — widely disseminated, scientifically rigorous, and having a demonstrable impact on the research of others or on the practice of behavioral medicine. 

Excellence in teaching and training goes beyond coursework requirements — inspiring and equipping students to launch successful careers. Achievement in practice involves applying evidence-based methods to improve health through behavior change at a national or international level. 

Leadership achievements support the implementation of behavioral medicine research, training, or clinical programs. Such activities include expanding opportunities for practice, growing teaching programs, or improving the quality and reach of behavioral medicine. 

International Journal of Behavioral Medicine (IJBM) Awards

These awards are designed to recognize excellence in publication and contribution to the field of behavioral medicine through publishing in IJBM. 

This annual award begun in 2019 and is sponsored by our publishing partner, Springer Nature. The award acknowledges excellence behavioral medicine research published in the International Journal of Behavioral Medicine. 

These awards recognize important publications in behavioral medicine. Regional awards include an awardee each from Asia, Australia, North America, South America, and Europe.
